Catherine Campbell Bunch, 92, of Atlanta, Georgia, and formerly of Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina, entered eternal rest Sunday, July 15, 2018. Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 21, 2018 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 12:00 p.m., followed by a private burial. The family will receive friends Saturday, one hour prior to the service at the Chapel.
Catherine was born September 11, 1925 in Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter of William Duncan Campbell and Mildred Lumley Campbell. In 1948 she married "the best man I ever knew", Donald Cleveland Bunch. They were married until his sudden passing in 1987. For those 38 years she put Don through two graduate schools, raised their two children, and mothered hundreds of Citadel cadets having lived first at the Old Citadel on Marion Square then the current campus on the east bank of the Ashley River. Catherine was a laboratory technician and bacteriologist retiring from the VA Hospital after Don's death, then moving to Seabrook Island.
Known to all as "Baba" (a name given by her daughter while learning to talk), Catherine was a proud and active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Kiwanis. She would dress in her warm-up suit to prepare for her best sport in which she became a Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. She truly excelled as the surrogate mother to countless Citadel tennis players who frequented her home for over 35 years. Her stash of chocolate pound cakes, gallons of iced tea and open refrigerator were the after "mess" treat for her boys. She thrived at cooking and entertaining from a simple family roast beef to elegant wedding parties.
Catherine is survived by her daughter, Katie Bunch Patterson (John) of Atlanta, GA; son, Thomas W. Bunch, II (Gwen) of Columbia, SC; two sisters: Virginia Packard of Greenville, SC and Elizabeth Hutto of Leesville, SC; nine grandchildren: Jay Patterson, Molly Patterson, Carrie Patterson, Chad Patterson, Sarah Patterson, Don Bunch, Cammie Bunch, Becky Bunch, and Christian McDade.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Citadel Brigadier Club (for the Donald C Bunch Scholarship), 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409 or the charity of your choice.
