Carolyn Hunter Shirley, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at home surrounded by her loved ones. In following with her wishes, there will be a private memorial service at a later date. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston, SC.
Carolyn, or Cookie to her family, was born on December 12, 1928, the only child of Nick and Dorothy Hunter. She graduated from Greenville High School and attended Furman. Carolyn married Tom Shirley on January 22, 1948. They were married 54 years, until his death in 2002. They resided for many years in Greenville, SC until moving to Roanoke, VA. Tom and Carolyn had six children. They retired to Pawley's Island, SC and when Tom became ill, they moved to Charleston to be closer to family. Shy by nature, Carolyn was a woman of great faith. During the last few years of her life, she had many health challenges, yet she never complained. She loved Atlanta Braves, Duke basketball, peppermint patties and her dog Ginger. Most of all, she loved her family. Her quiet strength and devotion to her family were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Carolyn is survived by her six children, twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Thank you Mom for being the best mother, grandmother and great-grandmother we could ever have been blessed with.
What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply, becomes a part of us. (Helen Keller)
