Carolyn Ann Phelps

May 20, 1952 — July 19, 2020

Carolyn Ann Phelps, 68, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side. A private funeral service will be held Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Prospect Baptist Church, 1351 Makatoka Road, NW, Supply, N. C. 28462. Please follow all Covid recommended guidelines. Carolyn's cousin Reverend Stephanie Croom will officiate.

Carolyn was born May 20, 1952 at James Walker Memorial Hospital, Wilmington, North Carolina, the second daughter of the late Lorene Fearnside Phelps and Warren B. Phelps. Carolyn defied all odds, being born with Down Syndrome in 1952 and life expectancy was declared to be age 12 by her doctors. Sadly, she was not able to receive a formal education, but her patient, loving family taught her many wonderful skills, helping her to live an extremely joyful and full life. Carolyn made each person's life she encountered better. She loved with a freedom not many of us can imagine. She loved most all foods, but especially her shrimp and rice. She enjoyed drawing and coloring. She especially looked forward to Birthday Celebrations, of any kind, as "Birthday Cake' was her all-time favorite food group, coconut cake being the very best option of all! Carolyn came from a family with a rich musical background, and she loved to listen to music and sing along. Her all-time favorites were Johnny Cash, Ernie Haase, and Lynda Randle. She would love to shop for new "tapes" every chance she got. She also loved photos of family and spent much time enjoying looking through them. She also really loved to have her picture taken any time a camera was spotted in use!

She is survived by her loving Sister, Frances (Dennis, Sr.) Ward of Mt. Pleasant, SC and one nephew, Dennis (Cate Aubuchon) Ward, Jr. of St. Louis, MO. She was dearly loved by many Aunts, and Uncles, all of North Carolina. She also adored and cherished her all of her many cousins and extended and adopted families. Carolyn really looked forward to and enjoyed many family gatherings at the "Old Place" family farm in NC.

Her family would also like to thank the loving care helpers who provided support and tender assistance over the last few years.
