Carolyn Cardwell Cook Lightcap, widow of Mr. Thomas Marpun Lightcap, II, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, May 30, 2015 at her home in Johns Island, SC. She was in the presence of family at the time of her passing.
Mrs. Lightcap was born at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on February 28, 1931. She was the fourth child and second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Douglas Cook, Sr.
She attended Washington Seminary, where she was a member of Pi Pi Sorority. She was a Sigma Nu Sweetheart and had her first date with her future husband at the Sigma Nu Alumni dinner dance at Druid Hills Club on October 7, 1947. She delighted children and grandchildren with stories of their July 30, 1949 elopement.
She was an accomplished horsewoman and enjoyed success showing champion fine harness and roadster ponies during the 1960's. She also enjoyed playing bridge with the same bridge club for over 40 years. In her later years, she and her husband spent many wonderful days boating and playing golf together. She was a member of The National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered with various charities, including the Rabun Gap-Nocoochee Club of Atlanta, The March of Dimes and Habitat for Humanity. Prior to her move to South Carolina to live with her daughter, Carmen, she was a member of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church of Carrollton, GA. Always a gracious and caring matriarch, she gave her family an abundance of love and guidance. The blessings and grace of her life will be cherished by many.
Mrs. Lightcap was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Mr. Thomas Marpun Lightcap, II, and their infant son, Joseph David Lightcap; brother, Mr. G. Philip Cook; and son-in-law, Mr. Kenneth R. Diaz, Sr.
She is survived by her son, Mr. Thomas M. Lighcap, III and wife, Gloria, of Sarasota, FL; daughters: Ms. Martha S. Lightcap of Atlanta, GA, Mrs. Carmen L. Diaz of Johns Island, SC and Mrs. Carolyn L. Anderson and husband, Myles, of Roswell, GA; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. Julianne Cook Ashmead of Ashland, OR; and brother, Mr. Lawrence Douglas Cook, Jr. of Atlanta, GA.
The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service Wednesday, June 3, 2015, in The Westview Abbey Chapel, Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Drive SW, Atlanta, GA, at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the cemetery. The family will receive friends in The Westview Abbey Chapel Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by J.
