Carolyn Cole Shippey Gilden quietly slipped away to join her heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, after a long, brave struggle with cancer. Carolyn was born on March 9, 1942 in Columbia, SC, daughter of the late Sarah Wicker Cole and Harold Douglas Cole of Columbia. She graduated from Dreher High School and attended the University of South Carolina.
She is survived by her husband, William H. Gilden; two children from her first marriage, Kelley Shippey Gilbert of Spartanburg, SC and Dr. Kelley Ford Shippey, III (Heather) of Greenville, SC; two stepsons, William H. Gilden, Jr. (Katie), of Rodman, SC and Jody H. Gilden (Traci) of Lexington, SC; sisters, Mary Anne DuBose (Buddy) of Columbia, SC, Lucy Lippard (Jim) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Susan Gunter of Columbia, SC; eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
As an amateur genealogist, she enjoyed tracing family histories. She was an active member and held offices in many of the following: The Jamestowne Society, the American Descendants of the House of Burgesses 1619-1699, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, The Colonial Dames of America, The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, and The Huguenot Society of South Carolina; she was also an inactive member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Carolyn had many friends whom she loved and cherished.
A funeral service celebrating Carolyn's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2016 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 2107 North Highway 17, Mt. Pleasant, SC, where she was a member for many years. Her family will receive friends following the service at the church.
