Caroline Lebby Hassell Whitener, wife of Stephen Douglas Whitener, died April 11, 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Caroline was born February 10, 1958 in Charleston, the daughter of Caroline Lebby Smith Hassell and John Fleming Hassell, Jr. She grew up at Tanglewood, a family estate outside Mt. Pleasant. She attended East Cooper School and received her high school diploma from College Preparatory School. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in general studies. Additional study of the travel agency business was completed in Atlanta.
Caroline chose the travel arena for her career. She worked for Adventure Travel in Charleston and AAA in Mt. Pleasant for many years before founding her own firm, Cruises for Less. She was the recipient of numerous sales awards, including many from Carnival Cruises. Her work enabled her to indulge a love of travel, and Caroline was an ardent cruiser, especially in the Caribbean. Also a frequent flyer, she traveled extensively in the world, the only unfortunate experience having been a broken leg suffered while ice skating in Italy.
Caroline was an avid outdoors sportswoman with a particular fondness for fly fishing, which she practiced from Alaska to Belize. For several years, she volunteered with Casting for Recovery and, at a mountain retreat, taught fly fishing to women undergoing breast cancer treatment or recovery. She was a member of Charleston's Breakfast Rotary Club and several travel-related professional organizations.
She was predeceased by her parents. In addition to her husband, survivors include a sister, Mary H. Adams (Jim), and brothers John F. Hassell, III (Jane), Claiborne A. Hassell (Carole), and Fleetwood S. Hassell (Elizabeth), eleven nieces and nephews, and eight great nieces and great nephews.
The family will be forever grateful to Kia Brown for her friendship, professionalism and committed care for Caroline during a period of declining health.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 27 at Christ Church, Mt. Pleasant, a reception in the Parish Hall will follow. The family will have a private burial in the church cemetery at later date.
