Caroline Poulnot Martin

September 26, 1924 — August 5, 2010

Caroline Poulnot Martin entered into eternal life on Thursday, August 5, 2010, peacefully in her home of 57 years.  She was born September 26, 1924, the only daughter of Edith Oliver Poulnot and Charles Frederick Poulnot, Sr., and grand-daughter of Lucy M. and E. Huger Poulnot, Sr.

She attended Memminger School and graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, VA/TN.  She spent the early years of her marriage to the late Luther C. Martin, MD in Cincinnati, OH for his neuro-surgery residency, but returned to Charleston, after a brief assignment in Germany, for the remainder of her life.  Caroline was an active volunteer with the Charleston Symphony for 45 years; she served on the board of the Ladies Auxiliary of Roper Hospital; a 25 year member of the Charleston Garden Club; and worked for 18 years in the Dept. of Cardiology at MUSC.  But her most cherished priority was her love of Grace Episcopal Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married, and where she worshipped  (in Pew #81) for 85 years.  She volunteered there in the Sunday School, the ECW, and the altar guild.

Caroline is survived by her son, Bruce C. Martin of Sullivan's Island, SC: her daughters, Suzanne M. Richardson (Bradley) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Lisa M. Pearson (Stan) of Folly Beach, SC; her grandchildren John Bradley Richardson, Jr. (Dori) of Murfreesboro, TN, and Lisa Caroline Pearson of James Island, SC; and great-grandchild Levi Bradley Richardson.  She was predeceased by her younger brother, Charles F. Poulnot, Jr. Caroline's children would also like to gratefully acknowledge her extended family of precious care-givers: Beverly Lewis, Hope Whaley, Tiffany Evans, and her Hospice family.

The relatives and friends of Caroline P. Martin are invited to attend her funeral services, Saturday, August 14, 2010 at eleven o'clock at Grace Episcopal Church.  Her inurnment will immediately follow the service in the Columbarium, with a reception to follow in Hanahan Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saving Grace Fund at Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
