Listen to Obituary

Carole Lane Jaques, 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of the late Charles A. Jaques, Jr., entered into eternal rest Sunday, August 24, 2025, due to Glioblastoma (brain tumor). Her funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, September 6, graveside, at Saint James Episcopal Churchyard, 1872 Camp Rd. The family will receive visitors Friday, 5-7 pm, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. downtown chapel.

Carole was born January 2, 1941, in Jacksonville, FL, daughter of the late Herbert D. Lane, Jr. and Muriel Scott Lane. The family relocated to the Avondale neighborhood of Charleston when Carole was one, and it was here that Carole formed many lifelong friends. She attended St. Andrews High School and then College of Charleston, where she met and married her husband of 62 years, Charles Jaques, Jr. Carole went on to earn a Masters of Education from the Citadel. A gifted and creative teacher, she taught language arts and reading for 40 years at Porter-Gaud School, where she helped develop a love of reading and shaped the lives of generations of students. A talented seamstress and enthusiastic supporter of the arts, she also coordinated costuming for the musical productions at Porter-Gaud for many years.

Carole’s hobbies and interests were numerous and diverse. She delighted in gifting loved ones with handmade quilts, scarves, and hats. During Covid, she made a wonderful assortment of custom face masks for her family. Cooking was another way Carole showed her love, and she will long be remembered for her okra soup and sausage bread. Other interests included gardening, genealogy, attending concerts and musicals, fishing and boating (never as often as she would have liked!), and following college sports, especially basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics. Avid supporters of the College of Charleston, Carole and Charlie had season tickets to the basketball games and attended in person as long as they were able. Carole also loved reading and playing board games, and she enjoyed traveling, both in person and by chair through shows such as Rick Steves. Carole was wired to help others, as evidenced in her care of her family, students, friends, and wider community. Not one to seek recognition, she made a meaningful impact in the lives of several individuals with help and donations that she never mentioned to others. Carole and her husband were also sustaining contributors to the James Island Outreach.

Carole is survived by her daughter, Laura Jaques (Anoop Varghese) of Akron, OH; two grandchildren: Victoria Lane Beaudoin (Kenneth) and Charles A. Jaques IV; five great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog Cooper. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Charles A. Jaques, III.

Memorials may be made to James Island Outreach, 1860 Camp Rd, Charleston, SC 29412.
