Carol Spurlock Steinbrecher Carnell of Charleston entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of November 19, 2018 with her husband holding her hand. She fought a heroic battle with Alzheimer's disease. The family will receive friends, Friday, November 23, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Her funeral service will be held at the Graveside Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Ashley River Road at 2:00 p.m.
She was born March 17, 1946, the daughter of the late Edgar and Virginia Jones Spurlock of Huntington, West Virginia. Carol's seventh grade teacher announced one day that, "Carol is going to be a teacher." That proclamation set the course for the rest of her life. Carol graduated from Huntington High school and received a business education scholarship to Marshall University. She graduated from Charleston Southern University where she did practice teaching at Chicora High School. She received her Master's degree plus thirty from the University of South Carolina. She taught computer science at Brookland-Cayce High School in Columbia for 19 years. In Charleston she taught at Morningside Middle School and West Ashley High School. She also taught continuing education classes for other teachers. Carol started her career by teaching typing but before retirement had three state of the art computer labs. She was a sponsor of the Future Business Leaders of America programs both in Columbia and Charleston. Carol was a committed Christian and a devoted member of the sanctuary choirs at Northside Baptist Church in West Columbia and First Baptist Church of Charleston where she served as chair of the music committee. She also sang with the Lexington County, SC, Choral Society.
Carol is survived by her husband Mitch Carnell of Charleston and his children Suzanne Smith of Murfreesboro, TN and Michael Carnell of Charleston, SC; daughter Tawnya Steinbrecher of Columbia, SC, sister and brother-in-law Karen and Fred Rast of Holland, Michigan; and her brother Edgar Spurlock of Hunting, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters JoAnn and Vickie and her brothers: Freddie, Billy, Dennis, Gary, and Richard.
The family is grateful for the loving care shown to Carol by Kathy Blalock, Brandy Brown, Debbie Justice, Jan Devenny, Latasha Ray and Cassie Shokes with a special thanks to the Rev. Gene Plyler. We are also grateful to the wonderful doctors, nurses and aides of the Roper Hospice at home team and at the Roper Respite Cottage in Mt. Pleasant.
