Carol Mead Koopman

Carol Mead Koopman, 80, of Charleston, South Carolina, was joyfully welcomed into Heaven into the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ, on July 29, 2026. Born on June 18, 1946, in Charleston, she was the beloved daughter of the late Percy Orian Mead Jr. and Margaret Mead.

A lifelong Charlestonian, Carol treasured her hometown and the many friendships she made throughout her life. Carol loved to fish, you could always find her beside the pond or riding horses. She graduated from St. Andrew’s High School before earning her degree from The Baptist College, now known as Charleston Southern University. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she was a member of First Baptist Church of Charleston, where she met the love of her life, Billy Koopman. Together they spent nearly 56 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, unwavering faith, and cherished memories.

Carol had a servant’s heart and found great joy in teaching children’s Sunday School alongside her beloved friend Mildred Fingar for many years. Together, they planted seeds of God’s love in the hearts of countless children. She loved the Lord with all her heart and lived out her faith through kindness, compassion, and genuine encouragement. She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. Carol had a way of bringing people together and making every occasion feel special.

She had a deep love for music, which filled her home and her heart. She was known for her generosity. Her generosity knew no bounds. She gave freely and humbly and found great joy in blessing others. She poured her heart into everything that she did and made everyone feel deeply loved. This love was shown especially to her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all whom she dearly loved.

Carol, affectionately known as “Shug” to those who loved her, is survived by her devoted husband, Billy Koopman Jr.; her daughters, Candice Koopman Lapham, Barb Koopman, and Kimmie Koopman Durham (Jon); her brother, Robert Markley Mead; and her five beloved grandchildren, Allie Lockman, Sami Durham, Ada Durham, Lindsey Browder, and Elias Durham, and her loving sisters-in-law, Carol Sudyk (Bill), Elizabeth Mead, and Patricia Mead; along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Percy Orian Mead Jr. and Margaret Mead; her brother, Percy Orian Mead III; her sister, Barbara Cheryl Mead; and her nephew, Robert Markley Mead Jr.

Carol will be deeply missed, forever loved, and joyfully remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Family Hospice team for their compassionate care, kindness, and support.

Please join us for a receiving of friends on August 16th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church of Charleston, 48 Meeting Street, to visit and share memories.

The family will gather for a private burial to honor and celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to the children's ministry at First Baptist Church of Charleston.
