Carol S. Jacobsen, 75, of James Island, South Carolina, wife of Capt. Kenneth C. Jacobsen, U.S. Navy, (Ret.) entered into eternal rest Thursday, October 29, 2015. Her Funeral Service will be held Sunday, November 1, 2015 in John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway at 2:30 p.m. A reception and celebration of her life will be held at McLeod Plantation Pavilion 325 Country Club Drive following the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Carol was born December 17, 1939 in Louisville Kentucky. A 1957 graduate of Fern Creek High School, she attended the University of Kentucky as a freshman then transferred to her ultimate alma mater, the University of Louisville, where she was a political science major. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and president of the "Wandering Greeks" club, but her biggest takeaway from U Of L was the man she would marry, Kenneth Jacobsen of Brooklyn, NY.
Ken and Carol were married on June 6, 1960 and embarked upon the Navy life of military transfers around the country and the world. In the couple's married lives, they also lived on James Island on three separate occasions- on Wildwood Road 1963-66, Cornerstone Road 1976-1978, and their current residence on Wampler Drive beginning in 2001.
A life-long extrovert, Carol was a member or officer of several social organization, including Navy Officers Wives Club, NATO wives club, James Island Yacht Club Auxiliary, and more than one bridge club and church circle. Carol was also a Kentucky Colonel.
In her professional life, Carol worked in real estate, research, and administration, but her true calling was as a dedicated volunteer and community advocate. The following roles are just a small slice of her volunteerism: Navy Relief volunteer, PTA vice president, Board member (University of Louisville University Club, Louisville Automobile Museum) CASA volunteer, and Guardian ad Litem. A believer in civic connection, she was a candidate for James Island Town Council and frequent commentator on Charleston politics.
One of her proudest accomplishments was as a founding member of Friends of McLeod, formed to protect and preserve the historic McLeod Plantation. She was the recipient of the James Island Community Education Distinguished Service Award, and was awarded a certificate of appreciation by Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission for her work with the Friends of McLeod.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Kenneth Jacobsen, and three children: Susan Conlon (husband Phillip) of Charlotte, NC, Captain Kristin Jacobsen, US Navy, of Falls Church VA, and Kenneth Jacobsen II (wife Nicole) of Tacoma WA. Her grandchildren Julia Claire Conlon and Anders Milo Kai Jacobsen were a source of constant delight and pride. She will be deeply missed by her family, who hope that she is remembered for her kindness, curiosity and intellectual sparkle.
Memorials may be made to Hollings Cancer Center Office of Development, 86 Jonathan Lucas Street Charleston, SC 29425 or John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway Charleston, SC 29407 or Friends of McLeod, Inc., P.O. Box 13021, Charleston, SC 29422.
