It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Davison Byrnes at the age of 75. Carol died peacefully in her Roper Hospital room after a long fight against a rare blood disorder.
Born on December 8, 1948, in Leominster, Massachusetts, Carol spent her formative years in Jasper, Alabama, after moving there at the age of 14. She pursued her education diligently, graduating from Walker Junior College before earning a degree in Sociology from the University of Alabama. Carol's adventurous spirit led her to a career as a stewardess with Pan American Airlines, where she traveled the world multiple times and shared her love for exploration with many.
Her journeys eventually brought her to Miami, Florida, where she met her future husband, Bob Byrnes. The couple would later relocate to San Diego, California, where they exchanged vows and welcomed their daughter, Jennifer. In 1980, seeking a new paradise, Carol and Bob made the picturesque Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, their home.
In Charleston, Carol continued her academic pursuits at The Citadel, where she obtained Master's Degrees in Clinical and School Counseling. This qualification allowed her to make a significant impact in the Education Department as a research associate. There, she served as the coordinator for Project Challenge, a collaborative initiative between The Citadel and Burke High School. This program aimed to prevent students from dropping out and to prepare them for college, achieving notable success in its endeavors.
Throughout her life, Carol's passion for her work shone brightly, and she brought happiness and joy to all those fortunate enough to cross her path. In retirement, Carol and Bob indulged their shared love for travel, exploring the beauty this world has to offer.
Carol is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Bob, her daughter Jennifer Byrnes, her granddaughter Mehren Hewlett, and her sister Pamela Burgess (Joel). She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Blondell Davison.
A Funeral Service to honor Carol's life will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024 at J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, located at 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 5:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and a reception will follow.
As we reflect on Carol’s life, we remember her spirit, her compassion for others, and the love she shared with her family and friends. She leaves behind cherished memories that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew her.
