Carmela Schiro

Carmela Schiro, 90, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 22, 2024, in Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street at 11:00am. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Sunday, January 21, 2024 with the Rosary beginning at 5:00pm in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. Burial will be held in Rockford, Illinois at a later date.
 
Carmela was born February 12, 1933 in Rockford, Illinois, daughter of the late Charles Vaccarello and the late Tina Vaccaro Vaccarello. She attended the Chicago Art Institute where her skill of painting oil and acrylics grew into a life long love of the arts. She owned her own business for many years as a beautician, and worked for 25 years as an EEG technician at St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. Carmela was known for being a kind and giving person, knitting hats and scarves for the low income children who had to stand at the bus stop in cold Illinois winters, and hats for patients at Hollings Cancer Center Children's hospital, also lap robes for local nursing homes. Carmela was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, and will be remembered for the way she devoted herself to her community and the way she loved her family and friends.

She is survived by two daughters, Tina McCarthy (Darren) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Frances Sargent (Mark) of Rockford, IL; son, John Schiro (Anna) of Rockton, IL; six grandchildren, Todd Schiro, Christopher Hendrickson (Emily), Charles Schiro (Lorre), Nicholas Schiro (Lily), Carmela Shaw (Christopher), Michael McCarthy; and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles Angelo Schiro, brother, Alfonson Vaccarello, and sister, Josephine Puskarz.
