Mrs. Carlton Harville Whelan, 76, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of Wayne Whelan died peacefully on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 in the First United Methodist Church, 12 21st Avenue, Isle of Palms at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Virginia. Carlton was born October 13, 1939 in Richmond, Virginia, daughter of the late Carlton L. Harville and the late Lois Rogers Harville. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Anne Harville, Betty Francioni, Martha Johnson and Cecile Winston; and brother, William Harville. She was a graduate of Petersburg High School and also attended Mary Washington College. After her family and church, her personal passion was her fifty year pursuit of excellence in the needle arts. She studied at the Valentine Museum in Richmond and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She attended the annual Callaway School of the Needle Arts for more than 25 years and was active in local and regional embroidery and needlepoint organizations. In 1996, her Nutcracker-themed embroidery ornament was selected for display on a Christmas tree in the White House. She led the successful embroidery kneeler cover project for the First United Methodist Church Isle of Palms. Throughout her life she eagerly shared her love of the needle arts through tutoring and mentoring.
Known within the family as "D", she is survived by her husband of 54 years, Wayne Whelan; daughters, Karen Lynne Smith and Whitney Hoffman Dye; grandchildren, Joseph H. Smith V and Caitlyn Grace Stall; and several nieces and nephews.
