Carlton Julian Poulnot, Jr.

Carlton Julian Poulnot, Jr., 81, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Donna McCay Poulnot, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church (where he was a member), 405 King Street, Charleston, SC, at 2:00 pm. His ashes will be scattered at the National Navy UDT-Seal Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida, during their annual Veteran's Day Sunrise Service. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 28, 2019, at J. Henry Stuhr, INC. Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant, SC, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.

Carlton was born July 17, 1937, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Carlton Julian Poulnot and the late Hazel Gilbert Poulnot. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and was a member of the USC Letterman's Club. Carlton was then commissioned into the United States Navy. He served in the Navy Underwater Demolition Team 21 from May 1959 until June 1967 when under the Kennedy Administration it was reclassified as the Navy Seals. He served as a member of Seal Team 4.

Using his engineering degree, he worked in the gas department at SCE&G, was the City Engineer for the City of Charleston, and was VP of Landscape Pavers Limited. As an entrepreneur, he was part owner of Mt. Pleasant Jiffy Lube, Atlantic Boat Chandlers, Ashley Yachts, and Carolina Yacht Services. Following his love of sailing and boating, he was a marine surveyor, yacht broker, and delivery/charter captain as well as a recreational sailboat racer, from ocean racing to remote controlled model sailboats. Carlton was a Past Commodore of Charleston Yacht Club and Charleston Cruising Club. He was a member of Charleston Yacht Club, Hobcaw Yacht Club, CORA, the Arion Society, the German Friendly Society, and Charleston Rifle Club. His public service included a term on Mt. Pleasant Town Council.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna Poulnot of Mt. Pleasant; daughter, Carla Kinnett (Van) of Isle of Palms; son, Kirk Poulnot (Betsy) of Mt. Pleasant; brother, Capers Poulnot (Sandra) of Mt. Pleasant; granddaughters, Christine Kinnett, Caroline Kinnett, Ashley P. Salvo (Robert), Kelly P. Kumar (Karan), Katherine Poulnot; great-grandchildren, Patrick and Magdalena Salvo, Rowen Kumar; and his beloved beagle, Belle.
Carlton was beloved husband to Donna, respected "Dad" to his children , devoted "Bubba" to his grandchildren , and "special friend" to his acquaintances.

His family thanks the staffs of Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and Lutheran Hospice for their incredible care.
