Carleen Langley Smith, age 77, passed away peacefully on June 15 at home surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on July 22, 1948 in Charleston, Carleen lived a life defined by resilience, devotion, and unconditional love. She possessed a quiet strength that carried her through life’s challenges and a generous heart that made everyone around her feel welcome and cared for.

Carleen demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving her community through both volunteerism and philanthropy. She dedicated many hours volunteering at the VA Hospital, providing support and compassion to veterans and their families. Her leadership and dedication to healthcare continued through her service on the board of Roper Hospital. In addition, Carleen was a generous donor to the Hollings Cancer Center, supporting cancer research, treatment, and patient services. She also played an important role in the family business, helping manage and grow the enterprise.

For more than five decades, she was the heart of her family. Through celebrations and hardships alike, she was the one who kept loved ones connected, traditions alive, and family bonds strong. Her home was a gathering place, and her presence brought comfort, stability, and encouragement to those who knew her best.

She took great pride in her three sons. Her love for her children and grandchildren was unwavering, and she considered her family to be her greatest accomplishment.

One of her greatest joys was celebrating others. She loved holidays and made every occasion feel special, whether through thoughtful gifts, carefully chosen cards, or simply remembering the important moments in people’s lives. No birthday went unnoticed, and countless family members and friends looked forward to the cards that arrived year after year. Through these small but meaningful acts, she made people feel remembered, valued, and loved.

Carleen enjoyed boating, crabbing, and spending time entertaining friends and family when the boys were young. In her golden years, she found happiness in the simple moments spent with those she loved. She will be remembered for her kindness, determination, generosity, and her remarkable ability to make others feel important.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Woodie; her sons, Shawn (Sandra Love), Mark (Katherine Perry) and Ryan (Cherie Westendorff); her grandchildren, Natalie, Carson, Sarah, Olivia, Henry and George; sisters Gaye Jones and Darryl Langley; and many other family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love.

Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the traditions she preserved, and the countless acts of love and care that defined her life. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

In the hearts of those who loved her, she will always be remembered as the one who never forgot a birthday, never missed a holiday, and never missed an opportunity to let someone know they were loved.

Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 22, 2026 at the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends an hour before the service.
