Carl David Whitmer, Jr.

Card David Whitmer Mount Pleasant - Carl David Whitmer (Grandaddy), age 92, passed away peacefully in his home on July 18, 2023. Carl was born in Harrisonburg, VA. He graduated from the University of Virginia in Mechanical Engineering in 1954. After graduating from college, he married the love of his life, Virginia Wharton, and together they raised their family in Greenville, SC. 

Along with serving in the US Army and Reserve, Carl pursued a lifelong career in Mechanical Engineering, including his role as President of MP Husky. He and Virginia attended the Fourth Presbyterian Church. Carl was a member of the Poinsett Club, the Greenville Country Club, and the Pawley’s Island Yacht club. 

Carl’s greatest joy was spending time with loved ones in the Shenandoah Valley, on family ski trips, and at Litchfield beach, creating beautiful memories and traditions to be shared across many generations. He was an inspiration to his children, introducing them to numerous sports and hobbies. There was nothing he wouldn’t try if they were interested. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were especially fond of his endless supply of jellybeans and goodies! 

Carl was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Virginia. He is survived by son, Whit Whitmer (Kelly) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Barbara Connell (Rod) of Charleston; four grandchildren, Mary Keller Costa (JD), Barnes Connell (Whaley) and Heath Zimmerman (Andy) all in Charlotte, NC, and Halley Autry (Byron) of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Virginia, Artsy, Bee, Whit, William, Rosie, Gigi, Annie, and Thomas. 

Carl’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Franke Lutheran home, the Lutheran Hospice, and all his caregivers, including Carolyn, Marilyn, and Gerri. 

A joint memorial service will be held Saturday, July 29, 2023 in the Fourth Presbyterian Church, 703 East Washington St., Greenville, SC 29601 at 11:30 am for both Carl and Virginia.
