Carl Niles Masonberg 86, died on Wednesday, September 4th succumbing to metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Born August 17,1938 in Englewood, N.J. Carl was the son of Irene Kotick Masonberg Hennin and Harvey Masonberg and loving brother to Stanley Masonberg and Margie Masonberg - all preceding him in death. Carl leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years, Janet Feis Feldman Masonberg, his son Hal Masonberg of Mataro, Spain and daughter Jody Hewig (Bill) of Monroe CT., his step children Julie Feldman Linhart (Gary) of Phoenix, Az., and Joshua Feldman (Cynthia) of Charleston, and nine adoring grandchildren: William, Charlie, Zachary, Matthew, Sofia, Selie, Nate, Hunter and Brooke.
Carl’s professional journey was as vast as it was impactful. After graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson College he began his career as an insurance agent. He transitioned into medical sales and from there he was chosen to be part of a start-up company here in Charleston (Support Systems International - Hillrom). He was director of sales and was recognized for single-handedly selling more of their specialty beds in the first six months than everyone else in the company for that entire year. In addition to his success in sales he was awarded THE MAN OF THE YEAR for implementing the rental program which dramatically changed the trajectory of their company. From there he became the director of training where he hired the largest all nurse sales force in the country to sell their Clinitron beds. Before Carl retired from the company (which was bought out by Hillenbrand Industries) he became their Human Resource Specialist.
After his retirement Carl enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends, volunteering in the elementary schools reading to children and volunteering for over thirty years for Spoleto performances. Carl and his wife, Janet, volunteered for the Family Circle Tennis Tournament - now called Circle One Charleston Open Tennis Tournament. They ushered there every year since it’s been in Charleston. Carl enjoyed traveling to many countries around the world. He also loved sailing, and playing tennis. He took great pride in being the captain of his tennis team for the past 15 years. There wasn’t a sports game that he didn’t enjoy watching on TV but his favorite teams to root for were the NY Giants, Clemson and USC.
Carl will be remembered as a loving husband, father, step-father, grandfather and a caring friend. He was the master of asking questions - always saying, “What if???” His warmth, wisdom and the joy he brought to every gathering will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be held for Carl’s family and friends at Synagogue Emanuel on September 29th at 2:00PM
Memorial donations may be made in Carl’s memory to the LUSTGARTEN FOUNDATION Pancreatic Cancer Research at lustgarten.org or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
