Carl Griffith “Griff” Johnson, 71, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Sunday, June 28, 2026. His Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 10:00am, at St James Episcopal Churchyard, 1872 Camp Road, James Island, SC. Arrangements J Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Griff was born November’s 2, 1954 in Michigan, and he was a proud descendent of hearty Swedes. He retired from MUSC, was a Boy Scout Troop leader, and, for many years, maintained the St James Episcopal Church grounds alongside his father.
Griff was a sincere and sentimental soul. He married his high school sweetheart, Cathy. They were an unforgettable pair. He was a loving and devoted spouse, kind and patient caregiver, and dear and loyal friend. He loved and had great recollections of almost anything “James Island”. Griff lived the better part of his life with a number of physical disabilities. He met these challenges with determination, positivity, and faith. His example was an inspiration to everyone who knew him well. He lived with gratitude for his Lord and friends. He will be a welcomed addition to the Communion of Saints.
He is predeceased by his wife, Catherine McKinney Johnson, and his parents Carl Gunnar Johnson and Lorene Blair Johnson. He is survived by cousins and friends.
Memorials may be made to St James Episcopal Church, 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412 or James Island Outreach, 1860 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412 or https://www.jioutreach.org.
