Carl William Gartenberg

July 17, 1929 — October 31, 2010

Carl William Gartenberg, husband of Louise Piltz Gartenberg, of 91-7 Ashley Hall Plantation Rd., Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on October 31, 2010.  Carl was born in New York City on July 17, 1929, the son of Joseph and Kate Knobler Gartenberg.  He was raised in Brooklyn, NY, graduated Lafayette High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Long Island University, where he was a founding member of Sigma Beta Phi fraternity.  He proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.  


Carl retired from S&K Famous Brands menswear after twenty-five years of loyal service.  During his tenure with S&K, he became one of their most popular and dynamic sales managers, winning numerous awards for outstanding sales production.  In recognition thereof, he was inducted into the S&K Hall of Fame in Richmond, Virginia. 


Carl and Louise enjoyed all types of travel, especially cruising (particularly out of Charleston Harbor).  He was a sports enthusiast, and won many trophies in bowling and paddleball.  He was a member of the Charleston Jewish Federation, Hebrew Benevolent Society, West Ashley Democratic Club, and the Charleston Jewish Community Center.  Carl was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose family meant the world to him.


He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise Piltz Gartenberg, son Jess Michael Gartenberg of Charleston, SC, daughter Beth Joanne Faucette of Greenville, SC, grandson Jack Lawrence Gutkin of Kerhonkson, NY, and sister Lorraine Solow of Delray Beach, FL. He is fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.


Services will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at ten o'clock at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.  Burial will follow at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC at two o'clock with military honors.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl's honor to a charity of one's choice.
