Carl Vernon Carter, Sr. N. CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest on the morning of May 3, 2011, Carl Vernon Carter, Sr., beloved husband of Shigeko Okano Carter. Residence, North Charleston, SC. Relatives and friends of Carl Carter are invited to attend the funeral services, Friday, May 6, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH WOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road. Burial services with full military honors will follow after the services in Carolina Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 5, 2011, from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m., in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel.


 Mr. Carter was born May 17, 1931, in St. Paul, SC, son of William "Luther" Carter, Sr. and Bessie Mae Canady Carter. He retired as a Gunnery Sgt. with the United States Marine Corps after serving his country honorably for almost twenty-four years. During his military career, he served in Korea and Vietnam. He received numerous accommodations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal, Rifle and Pistol Experts Badge. He was active in the community having served as a board member of the Ashley River Fire Department. He participated both in civic clubs and his children's school activities. He was a former member of the U.S. Dance Club, Charleston Chapter.


Carl is survived by his loving wife, Shigeko; daughter Diane Elaine Reesby and her husband Antony of Youngstown, OH; sons, Carl V. Carter, Jr. and his wife Carol of Charleston, SC and Luther I. Carter, MD, former Commander with the United States Navy, and his wife Lori Lee of Gulf Breeze, FL; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter Crystal Denise Carter.
