IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carl Frederick
Broadwell
July 14, 1960 – December 9, 2025
Carl Frederick Broadwell, 65, passed away on December 9, 2025, in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Born on July 14, 1960, in Frankfurt, Germany, Carl carried with him a deep appreciation for his Southern and German heritage throughout his life. He was the son of Lee W. Broadwell, Jr. and Christine M. Broadwell, both of whom preceded him in death.
Carl grew up in North Charleston and graduated from Gordon H. Garrett High School. He attended the College of Charleston and Trident Technical College. He went on to build a dedicated career as a truck driver and spent the last 14 years of his professional life working for the United States Postal Service. His strong work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his time behind the wheel and on the job. He was a member of the American Postal Workers Union, Charleston Area Local 566.
Beyond his career, Carl was known for his kind nature, strong Christian faith, love of music, and intellectual spirit. Carl found joy in observing the birds of the Lowcountry. For many years, especially in the 2010s, he was an avid birder, participating in many bird counts throughout South Carolina and the southeast with Audubon and friends. The natural beauty of coastal South Carolina resonated with him-especially its beaches-and he often sought relaxation and rejuvenation there.
When he was young, Carl was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in North Charleston. He delivered newspapers for years and was even The Post and Courier Carrier of the Year. He played piano, guitar, trombone, and sang. In the 1990s, he was a member of the Grace Church Cathedral Adult Choir in Charleston. He attended countless concerts in various music genres, including rock, jazz, classical, and gospel concerts. Carl’s favorite musical genre in recent decades was gospel music, for which he had a deep passion.
A devoted admirer of the fine arts, Carl was particularly fond of Piccolo Spoleto and Spoleto Festival USA. He attended and volunteered for both festivals with great enthusiasm over many years. His love for culture extended into everyday life. He was known among those close to him not only for his artistic sensibilities but also for his appreciation of truly good food, such as seafood, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and really good cookies-simple pleasures that brought him joy and became part of how others fondly remember him. Each year, he gave German cookies for Christmas to many friends and work colleagues.
An enthusiastic endorser and campaigner of some political candidates, Carl constantly educated himself on local, state, and federal issues and then supported candidates that were like-minded. He was very passionate about the environment, care of the poor and homeless, and animal rights, among other issues.
Carl is survived by his brother Louis Broadwell, sisters Patricia Stephenson and Rosemarie “Romy” Rivera, longtime girlfriend Brenda Boles, an aunt, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and those who knew him through shared passions and enduring friendships.
May Carl’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life lived with curiosity, kindness, and heartfelt devotion to the things he loved.
