Candice Clowney Hawkins passed away peacefully at home in Meggett, SC on June 1, 2018 after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was born on March 26, 1956 in Charleston, SC to Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas Clowney. Candi attended Irmo High School, graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Early Childhood Education, and served as President of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She married her high school sweetheart, Michael Mills Hawkins, M.D.
Candi is survived by her husband of 40 years, Mike, and her three sons, Mills Hawkins (Courtnee), Zann Hawkins (Sarah) and Tyler Hawkins (Savannah). She adored her grandchildren Millee, Michael, Hollis, Caroline and fifth grandchild due in mid-June.
She is also survived by her parents, Bill and Mary Clowney, sister Melody Clowney Whitworth (Bobby) and brother William Thomas, Jr. (Beau) Clowney (Teresa) and her niece Zoe Clowney and nephew William Clowney. Candi was predeceased by Mr. and Mrs. William Charles Hawkins.
Candi began her teaching career at Barnesville Academy in Barnesville, GA and later was on the inaugural faculty at Ashley River Creative Arts School. She recently retired following a long tenure teaching Spanish at Mason Preparatory School. While living in Walterboro, SC, she was chairman of Relay for Life. Also in Walterboro, she was an avid tennis player whose team won the doubles state championship in 1996. She loved the social groups she participated in, including Tea and Topics ladies group, Supper Club, "The Taters," and a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Services for Candi will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel.
