Candice Bates-Quinn, 63, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of George Douglas Quinn, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014, after a valiant battle with cancer. Her funeral service will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 in the main church of Christ Church, Mount Pleasant at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends Friday, March 7, 2014 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Candy was born in 1951 in Anderson, South Carolina, daughter of Charles Lyman Bates and the late Jean Weber Bates. She was well loved by family, friends, colleagues, and students for her tender, generous heart, her passionate desire to help kids and their families, and her feisty sense of humor. Those close to her will also remember her as a fabulous cook and for her boundless gift of hospitality.
A graduate of Columbia College with a Bachelor's Degree in Arts Education, Candy also held a Master's Degree in Personnel Services and Elementary and Secondary Guidance from Clemson University. Early in her professional career, Candy taught art before moving into guidance. For nearly 30 years she has served as the Coordinator of the School Counseling Program for Charleston County School District, overseeing Guidance Counselors in all district schools. Her responsibilities have included professional development and monitoring and implementation of new programs, including coordinating the CCSD Crisis and Aftercare Team for students and staff. A S.C. Licensed Professional Counselor and a National Certified Counselor, Candy was highly sought after on a national level as a speaker and school program developer, and she received numerous awards for her innovative leadership in program development. She was a member of numerous state and national Guidance and Counseling Associations and served as President of the South Carolina Counseling Association. Candy also served as a member of the ACT State Advisory Board, the Citadel Counselor Education Advisory Board, the Mental Health Association of the Low Country Board, and the Charleston County Substance Abuse Commission Advisory Board. She was the CCSD liaison to the Dee Norton Low Country Children's Center, Darkness to Light, Coast Crisis Chaplaincy, and the Charleston County Department of Social Services. Her passion was to help kids and their families, especially in the prevention of a substance abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, and suicide, and her crisis management skills when trauma struck students, families, and school district staff were unparalleled.
Candy is survived by her husband of 23 years; daughter, Lauren Quinn Morrow (Jeremy) of Mt. Pleasant; father Charles Lyman Bates of Mt. Pleasant; brothers Charles Lyman Bates, Jr (Suzanne), Christopher Arthur Bates (Rhonda) Awendaw, South Carolina; sisters Toni Sharle Bates, James Island; Jamie Bates Adair (Forrest) of Clinton, SC; Melisa Bates of Daniel Island SC; Marla Bates Garrison (Kevin) of Texas; Artina Bates Sandlin (Jeff) of Canton, GA; 15 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother.
