The world became a little less cheerful on July 31, 2026, when Camilo Ramirez, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully.

Camilo was the kind of person who made those around him feel welcome. He was known for his warm smile, gentle nature, and calm presence. He never needed to be the center of attention; his quiet kindness and willingness to help were simply part of who he was. To know Camilo was to know someone you could count on—and many of the friendships he made throughout his life became friendships that felt more like family.

Born in Bogota, Colombia, Camilo lost his father at the tender age of six. From those early hardships, he developed the quiet strength and determination that would define much of his life. He taught himself, worked hard, pursued his education, and eventually met the woman who would become the love of his life, Martha. Together, they came to the United States in 1965 to build a life rooted in love, perseverance, and devotion.

Camilo and Martha had two sons, Camilo Jr. and Juan Carlos, who they raised in Northern Virginia. Even while working and attending night school to earn his undergraduate degree, Camilo made it a priority to make time for his family. He was there for Boy Scouts, sports, and the countless everyday moments that make up a childhood. He took great pride in his sons and, later, in his grandsons, Joseph and Johnny.

One of Camilo’s greatest joys was his love of horses. His fascination with the Western films he enjoyed watching was matched by a lifelong admiration for these beautiful animals. With Martha’s love and support, he eventually fulfilled his dream of owning horses when they moved to their modest farmette in Purcellville, Virginia. His face would light up whenever he had the opportunity to talk about Spencer, Molly, and Intrigue. To Camilo, they weren't simply horses, they were family, and he proudly called them the best pets in the world.

In his later years, Camilo’s health declined, eventually leaving him unable to care for himself. During that difficult time, Martha never left his side. After 61 years of marriage, she continued to care for him with the same love, loyalty, and devotion that had carried them through their life together. Her presence was a final testament to the extraordinary bond they shared.

Camilo leaves behind his beloved wife, Martha Cheyne-Ramirez; his sons, Camilo Jr. and his wife, Darla Howard-Ramirez, and Juan Carlos and his wife, Jennifer Zimmerman-Ramirez; his grandsons, Joseph and Johnny Ramirez; and a large extended family of relatives and friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Camilo’s life was not defined by wealth or fame, but by something far more meaningful: the love he gave, the family he built, the friendships he cherished, and the kindness he showed to others.

He will be deeply missed—but whenever a familiar smile brings comfort, whenever a horse captures someone's attention, or whenever family and friends gather together and share a story, a little piece of Camilo will still be there.

And that is how he would want to be remembered.

A funeral service will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 37730 St Francis Ct, Purcellville, VA, on September 25th at 1:30 pm.
