Calvin Setzer Cloninger, 96, of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of Frances Julia Harris Cloninger entered into eternal rest Tuesday, December 24, 2024. His memorial service will be held Friday, January 3rd in Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street at 2:00 p.m. The Committal will be in Claremont, North Carolina at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
Calvin was born January 4, 1928, in Claremont, North Carolina, son of Cephus Alexander Cloninger and Ruby Setzer Cloninger. He is preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Sherry Ann Kahney and 3 brothers - C.A. Cloninger; Miles Pernell Cloninger, and Clayton Cloninger and a sister - Josephine Cloninger Raudenbush.
Calvin spent his childhood in East Tennessee and returned to his family farm in Claremont, North Carolina. He graduated from Catawba County High School, Claremont, N.C. as the school Valedictorian in 1945. He attended Brevard College and graduated from The University of Tennessee with a degree in civil engineering. He was most recently employed by Tennessee Eastman in Kingsport, Tennessee from 1958 to 1994. He was a long-time member of Mountain View Methodist Church and served on the church council for many years. He has lived on Johns Island, SC since 2004.
Calvin was an active man who enjoyed sports, gardening, keeping bees and supporting his beloved Vols in sports. He loved maintaining a close relationship with his nieces and nephews and their families. He had many close friends at Kiawah River Estates who helped support and care for him in his later years.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Judith Gayle Cloninger Fellers (Henry) of Seabrook Island; son, Calvin Gregory Cloninger (Michelle) of Wilmington, North Carolina. He has 6 surviving grandchildren Brenda Hunt; Neal Larson; Julia Fellers Green; Justin Kahney; Miles Cloninger; and Abigail Cloninger. He has 7 great grandchildren Lucas, Colton, Benjamin, Caitlin, Michael, Hank, and Harrison.
Memorials may be made to Transforming Grace at Grace Church Cathedral, and Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic in lieu of flowers.
