C. Ronald Coward, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, died Monday, November 12, 2018. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 16, 2018 in the St. Andrews Church Mount Pleasant, 440 Whilden Street at 10:00 am. There will be a reception immediately after the service in Sam's Hall until 1:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Ron was born June 27, 1935 in Lake City, South Carolina, son of the late Clauson Lyles Coward and the late Alda Matthews Coward. Ron graduated from North Charleston High School in 1953 and Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1958 and Graduate School in 1959. He served as a Lt.(jg) in the United States Navy from 1959-1962. Ron was president of the Rotary Club of North Charleston from 1993-1994 and 1982. He was President of the S.C. Chamber of Commerce from 1991-1992, Chairman of Trident Technical College Foundation from 1988-1990, President of the Executives Association of Greater Charleston in 1985, President of the South Carolina Industrial Developers in 1977 and President of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce in 1976.
He also was President of the Charleston Trident United Way in 1975, Chairman of the Charleston Trident United Way Campaign in 1974, President of the Charleston Contractors Association in 1969, President of the Society of American Military Engineers from 1967-1968, Chairman of the Naval Base Redevelopment Authority from 1994-1995, Director of the Trident Technical College Foundation from 1986 to present and Chairman from 1989-1990, Director of Roper St. Francis Health Foundation from 1987 and Chairman from 1999-2001, he was a founding Director of the Bank of South Carolina from 1986-2009 and Director of the Charleston Regional Development Alliance from 2007-2010. He served as the former President of Ruscon Construction Company prior to forming Coward-Hund Construction Company. Ron was currently Director of the Bank of South Carolina East Cooper Advisory Board, 1996-Present, a member of St. Andrew's Church Mount Pleasant as Junior Warden in 1979 and Senior Warden in 1980. In 1995 he was the recipient of the Joseph P. Riley, Sr. award presented by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce to an individual for outstanding leadership within the community.
He is survived by his son, Clauson Ronald Coward Jr. (Nancy) of Mount Pleasant, SC; his daughter, Elizabeth Alice Coward of Mount Pleasant, SC; brother, Gary Matthews Coward (Vera) of Charleston, SC; grandson, Clauson Ronald Coward III; and granddaughter, Addie Bridgham Coward. He was preceded in death by a son, John Matthews Coward.
