Burton E. Moore

Burton E. Moore, Jr., 70, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, died Saturday, August 6, 2016. His family will host a Gathering of Friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd., Saturday, August 20, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. His graveside service will be held Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Avenue, at 4:00 p.m.

Burton was born January 22, 1946 in Augusta, Georgia, son of the late Burton E. Moore, Sr. and the late Mary Jane Porter Peeler Moore. He grew up in Columbia, SC and graduated from A.C. Flora High School. He attended The Citadel before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He later completed his education with a B.A. in History from The Baptist College. Burton then went on to Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA and then continued in the Marine Corps before leaving as a Captain. He later joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves during Operation Restore Hope in Somalia earning the rank of Major as an official combat artist. Along with dozens of drawings, Burton's painting, "Fight at 21 Octobre Triumphal Arch, Somalia," is in the collection of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Burton was an avid sportsman and outdoor enthusiast who began hunting at an early age. Although he enjoyed big game hunting, his passion was birds and he was a most accomplished wing shooter. Burton was most at home in the duck blind in foul weather with the whir of duck wings and a good retriever. This led him to a career as a professional wildlife and sporting artist for over twenty years painting waterfowl, antique duck decoys and sporting dogs. Among Burton's artistic accomplishments was painting, "South Carolina's Own: The Boykin Spaniel," a work that was instrumental in securing the breed as South Carolina's State Dog. Burton is also the only South Carolinian to win the Federal Duck Stamp design competition for his 1986-1987 Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp of the "Fulvous Whistling Duck."

He is survived by his son, Burton E. Moore III and his wife Holly, of Mount Pleasant, SC; two grandchildren, Lily Springs and Holmes Burton Moore; his former wives, Barbara D. Moore, of Mount Pleasant and Jan G. Moore, of Charleston; and several cousins.
