Bruce Richard Slack

Bruce Richard Slack, 94, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at home. The family will receive friends
Saturday, January 28, 2017 at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL beginning at noon followed by a memorial service to be held at 1:00 PM. A graveside service will be held in Greenwood Cemetery in LaGrange, IN Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11:00 am.

Bruce was born November 16, 1922 in LaGrange, Indiana, son of the late Harley Slack and Mable Gottschalk Slack. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, serving much of his time in Europe. He returned to South Bend, IN after the war and on August 18, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart Vera Belle Robinson in LaGrange and raised a family. Bruce was a twenty-two year employee of the Studebaker Automobile Company as a tool and die maker. He was also a twenty-six year employee of Capital Technologies in South Bend. Bruce and Vera were active members of the First United Methodist Church. Additionally, he was a long time troop commissioner for the Boy Scouts. Bruce taught his children the value of hard work and dedication to family and friends. Bruce enjoyed traveling and taking his family on an annual two week driving vacation every summer throughout the United States. In his lifetime he traveled most of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. He also traveled to Asia multiple times. Bruce was well read and informed but always humble and made many friends from all walks of life. He was admired by many because he could always be depended upon.

He is survived by Dolly and his two sons, Richard A. Slack (Linda) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Brian L. Slack (Anne) of Atlanta, GA; son-in-law Henry Martin of Bluffton, SC; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Karl Slack (Mabel) of Richmond, IN and his sister Mary Lou Foltz of Naples, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera in 1997, his daughter Virginia "Ginny" Martin who passed away in November 2016 and a sister Thelma Atkinson.
