Bruce Lawrence Saxton, 73, passed away on January 21, 2026, surrounded by family, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Bruce was a loyal and deeply devoted husband to his wife, Denise (Brass) Saxton. Together they spent 51 years building a life rooted in love, partnership, and shared adventure, whether camping in the mountains or soaking up the sun in the tropics. He was a dedicated and loving father to his two daughters, Jillian Anne Saxton (44) of Anchorage, Alaska, and Rachel Anne Saxton (39) of Summerville, South Carolina. He also shared a close bond with his son-in-law, Patrick Adam Lee (37), united by their shared interests and mutual respect.

Bruce was a proud and loving grandfather to Jillian’s four creative and spirited children: Addie and Sloane (15), Logan (13), and Kellan (7). He took great joy in watching them grow and celebrated their individuality.

A hardworking and principled man, Bruce dedicated 47 years of his professional life to the Chevron corporation. He began his career in Baltimore, Maryland. Starting at the ground level, Bruce worked his way up to becoming Supervisor of the Chevron plant in Charleston, South Carolina. His strong work ethic, integrity, and leadership earned him the respect and loyalty of his colleagues, many of whom remained lifelong friends.

Bruce is survived by his brother, John Ralph Saxton, Jr., and his wife, Kathy (Zellner) Saxton, and their sons, Matthew Bruce Saxton and John Robert Saxton.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Della Mae Shanahan (Saxton), and her husband, John Robert Shanahan. Bruce shared a close bond with their four children; Jack, Valerie, Paul (deceased), and David of Pasadena, Maryland. During his youth, Bruce spent many weekends with his sister’s family, enjoying summer days crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay at Dell and Bob’s home, creating memories he cherished throughout his life.

For many years Bruce was a competitive professional bodybuilder, earning numerous titles including Mr. Maryland, Mr. Delmarva (encompassing Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia), and Mr. South Atlantic. He also placed 10th in Junior Mr. USA and 5th in Mr. USA. His accomplishments reflected his discipline, determination, and lifelong commitment to fitness.

Bruce had three big passions; fitness, firearms, and the great outdoors. He loved the exhilaration of cardio and weightlifting, he spent decades studying firearms history and ballistics, and even shared his expertise with local law enforcement. Above all, he found peace and fulfillment in nature. An avid sportsman, Bruce enjoyed hunting throughout the east coast, from boar hunting in Georgia, bear hunting in Maine, to deer hunting here in South Carolina. He was known for donating what he harvested and ensuring nothing went to waste.

Despite his imposing physical presence, Bruce possessed a big gentle heart, especially when it came to animals. His home was rarely without pets, often including animals with special needs. In his younger years he frequently rescued injured wildlife and nursed them back to health, instilling in his children a deep respect for animals and the natural world. His eldest daughter, Jillian, continues this legacy today as a dedicated wildlife rehabilitation volunteer in Alaska. Bruce taught his children and those around him the importance of curiosity, preparedness, and respect of nature and to also have compassion for both people and animals. These values remain part of his enduring legacy.

Bruce loved to laugh, sit around the kitchen table, and tell stories. His corny dad jokes and endless tales of past adventures will be deeply missed. Bruce was a multifaceted man who worked hard, loved deeply, and showed up fully for the people and animals he cared about. He leaves behind a deep and lasting absence in the lives of all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Friends of Coastal South Carolina, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving and maintaining the natural landscapes Bruce loved so deeply.
