Bruce McCaw Howe

Bruce McCaw Howe, 95, widow of Arthur Gasque Howe, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on January 10, 2024 in Charleston, SC. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 18 at 11am at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. The family will stay outside to greet friends immediately following the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.

Bruce was born in Columbia, SC on February 23, 1928. She was the daughter of William Henry McCaw and Genevieve Anderson McCaw. She was raised in Columbia and graduated from University High School. She married Arthur Gasque Howe on July 8, 1949, and together, they raised their family on the Isle of Palms and in Mt. Pleasant, SC.  Bruce enjoyed cooking, drawing, coffee, classical music, jazz, dancing, walking, pilates, tennis and playing bridge with friends in her leisure time. In her later years, she volunteered at East Cooper Meals on Wheels and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Surviving are her children: William McCaw Howe of Mt. Pleasant, Bruce Howe Hendricks and her husband, Theodore Martin Hendricks, of Charleston, SC, and Genevieve Howe Hay and her husband, Eugene Gordon Hay, V, of Charleston; seven grandchildren: Bruce Hendricks Smith (Jacob), Theodore Martin Hendricks, Jr., (Tess), Ileana Marissa Howe, Caitlin McCaw Howe, Genevieve Pelham Hay (John), Eugene Gordon Hay, VI (fiancée Katie), and William Arthur Legare Hay (girlfriend Megan); and eight great-grandchildren.

Bruce was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Gasque Howe, and her son, Arthur Gasque Howe, Jr.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Bishop Gadsden and all of Bruce's loving caregivers, Carrie Bennett, Sandy Simmons, Linda Barron, Annette Caldwell, and Cynthia Gourdine prior to her time at Bishop Gadsden. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Employee Fund, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412.
