Brigadier General (USAF Retired) Charles C. Barnhill, Jr.

Brigadier General (USAF Retired) Charles C. Barnhill Jr., 85, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2023. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ann Herrin Barnhill, daughter Elizabeth Barnett; son in-law, Ryan Barnett; granddaughter, Avery Barnett; son Charles Barnhill Jr.; and brother in-law Burk (Susan) Herrin.

A Celebration of Life will take place Tuesday, October 24th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 440 Whilden Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC.  The Rev. Ted Duvall, Rector of Christ Church Anglican in Mt. Pleasant, will officiate. The committal will be held privately at a later date. Charles was a member of Christ Church Anglican, Mt. Pleasant for 32 years. 

Charles was born in Brooklyn NY, on July 7th, 1938. He attended Clinton H.S. in NY and graduated from Gainesville H.S., GA in 1956. Charles earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, in 1970 and a Master of Science degree from Central Michigan University in 1975. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1961 and soared to great heights, achieving the prestigious rank of Brigadier General as a navigator. Throughout his 30-year military career he was a Master Navigator with more than 7,500 flying hours and 184 combat missions. He served in the Vietnam War, as Commander of U.S Forces Azores during the first Gulf War, and retired as Director of Transportation, Logistics for the Air Force. His military awards and decorations include the Order of the Bayonet, Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. Upon retirement as Brigadier General in August, 1992, Charles worked as a real estate appraiser for Sass, Herrin & Associates for 20 years. 

Charlie will be remembered for his loving dedication to his family, his distinguished military career, his passion for golf, and his unwavering support for the Atlanta Braves. His presence will be greatly missed by those who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christ Church Anglican Building Fund and mailed to Christ Church Anglican, 3022 S. Morgans Point Road - #274, Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29466.
