Brenda Vaughn Gibbs, 79, of Yonges Island, SC, widow of Frederick L. Gibbs, Jr., passed away on October 21, 2024.
Born November 27, 1944, in Union, Brenda was the daughter of the late James Edward and Josie Gregory Vaughn.
Brenda grew up in West Columbia, SC, and graduated from Brookland-Cayce High School. After graduating high school, she met her husband, Fred, while working for Atlas Supply Company. After the birth of her first child, Brenda gave up her job and dedicated her time to caring for her children and her husband.
Brenda volunteered countless hours of her life to St. Paul’s Country Day School where her children attended, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and St. Francis Hospital. She loved to cook and bake and many of her recipes were featured in the cookbook she helped produce, A Tablespoon of Toogoodoo. Additionally, she was featured in the Post and Courier after winning a baking contest with her delicious apple bread.
Brenda’s children, Leslie, Edward, and Pritchet, fondly remember their mother never missing a sporting event or extracurricular activity in which they took part. She would even feed most of the high school football team on Friday afternoons in the fall before their games. Taking care of those she loved was truly Brenda’s love language.
Brenda and Fred also loved to travel near and far with friends and enjoyed monthly dinners with their supper club.
In addition to her parents and husband, Fred, Brenda was preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy and Eddie Vaughn.
Surviving Brenda are her children, Frederick “Leslie” Gibbs, III, of Charleston; William Edward (Emily) Gibbs, of Irmo; and Pritchet Kay Gibbs (Bradley Hendricks), of Charleston; a sister in -law, Charlotte V. Gibbs, of Aiken; and three granddaughters, Kathleen Lillian Gibbs of Walterboro, and Charlotte Ruth and Catherine Pearl Gibbs of Irmo.
The family would like to express their most sincere thanks to Brenda’s nurses who took care of her with love and compassion- Elizabeth Green, Hazel Poinsett, Lulu Matthews, Cora Jones and Earnestine Manigault, as well as the staff of Crescent Hospice, and neighbors Jeff and Marlene Newman and Bill Scott.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Leeza’s Care Connection, 201 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
A family graveside service will be held at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Irmo at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
