Boyce Luther Smith, III, 78, of Hollywood, South Carolina, husband of Barbara Matthews Smith, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, May 13, 2025. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 31, 2025 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 1:00 pm.
Boyce was born August 24, 1946 in Chesnee, South Carolina, son of the late Boyce Luther Smith, Jr. and Doris Alverson Smith.
Boyce Smith served as an assistant professor of business for Hans A. Nielsen College of Business at Charleston Southern University where he was the co-founding director of the Center for Personal Financial Management.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Economics, Phi Beta Kappa, and a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Smith received the Bronze Star for service in the Vietnam War as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Smith had over 35 years of management experience in various global management roles at Milliken & Company in Spartanburg, SC. He was a corporate officer and member of the Milliken Policy Committee for over 15 years. After retiring, they moved to Charleston and he began teaching at CSU.
He had more than 30 years of experience as a volunteer in the financial coaching of families through CSU, churches, and other ministries in Biblical principles of financial literacy. Mr. Smith was co-author with Ron Blue of Mastering Personal Finances, a Biblical Approach, BVT Publishing, 2018.
He has been married to his wife, Barbara, for over 53 years. They have 2 children, Mike Brown and his wife Michelle and Shari Matthews Legette and grandchildren Dillon, Alex, Joe, Dakota, and Sammie who all live in the Charleston area. He is survived by one brother, Jim Smith (Sherri), two sisters Peggy Band (Richard) and Susan Moore (Barry) and a sister-in-law, Jan Smith. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Mary All and brothers-in-law Ron Matthews and Mike Matthews.
He was a member of James Island Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a grandson Mason Legette, brother, David Smith and brothers-in-law Tom Matthews and Mark Matthews.
He enjoyed playing tennis, running, spending time with his grandsons at Folly Beach, and attending Sammie’s baseball games. A special thanks to his brother-in-law Ron Matthews for his assistance and care during his illness.
