Bonum Barnwell Sams, Sr., 90, of Knoxville, Tennessee, husband of the late Jennie Venning Smith Sams passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012 in Tucker, Georgia. The relatives and friends of Bonum Sams are invited to attend the Funeral Service at the graveside on Saturday, August 25, 2012 in the Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, 2304 Highway 17 N at 2:30 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Bonum was born January 4, 1922 , in Mount Pleasant, SC, the son of the late Rev. William Bee Sams and Bertha Hutson Sams. He graduated from Clemson in 1942 with a degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of the Pershing Rifles and Senior Platoon. He served as an officer in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He worked as an engineer for the General Electric Company, retiring in 1984. He lived an active life during retirement, playing tennis, hiking in the Smokies, and participating annually in the Senior Olympics Games.
Survivors include three sons: BB Sams, Jr.(Barbara), Social Circle, GA, Alan B. Sams (Diane), Tucker, GA ,and William B. Sams, San Diego, CA; grandchildren: Deidre Sams Davis (Will), Jennifer Sams Sweatman (Carl), and Alan B. Sams, Jr.; great grandson Cameron Davis; brother, Lt. Col. J. Hagood Sams, (USAF, Ret). of Savannah, GA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Jennie "Vee" Sams.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 440 Whilden Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
