Bonnie S. Nelson

June 3, 1918 — August 12, 2011

Bonnie Frances Shortt Nelson, 93, of Hanahan, SC, widow of Elmer F. Nelson, died Friday, August 12, 2011.


Born June 3, 1918 in Saltville, Virginia; she was the daughter of the late George Washington Shortt and Margaret Lilly Shortt.


During her career, Bonnie managed a Five & Dime Store in Virginia, retired as a procurement officer with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and was the church secretary for over 20 years at Hanahan Baptist Church. She was a great cook and enjoyed playing the autoharp with "The Hanahan Angels", a traveling autoharp trio.


Bonnie is survived by her daughters: Nancy Wittig and her husband Lovell of Cottageville, SC; Judy Hartin of Hanahan, SC; Karen and her husband Richard Koenig of Beaufort, SC; daughter-in-law Debbie Nelson of North Charleston, SC; brother, Havard Shortt of Abingdon, VA and sister Opal and her husband Warren Miller of Bristol, VA; grandchildren: Elizabeth Linker (David); Cynthia Jones (Richard), Denise Briggs (Paul), Richard Nelson, Laura Galton (Tom), Michelle Crippen (David), Scott Aubrey (Candis), Stoney Hartin III, David Nelson and Dennis Rau; 26 great-grandchildren and numerous loving nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Havard E. Nelson, brothers: Samuel Shortt and Blythe Shortt; grandson Lonnie S. Wittig and son-in-law Stoney Hartin, Jr.


The funeral service will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Monday, August 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM.  Interment will be held at Carolina Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends Sunday, August 14, 2011 between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel.


The family would like to thank Carolina Hospice Care for the loving care and attention given to their mother.
