Bishop Wesley Owens

February 26, 1931 — August 15, 2011

Bishop Wesley Owens, Jr., 80, affectionately known as "Pinky", of Ladson, SC, died Monday, August 15, 2011.


Born February 26, 1931 in Charleston, SC he was one of six children of Bishop Wesley Owens, Sr. and Viola Grooms Owens.  He served in the US Army and was a Golden Glove boxer while in the Army. He was a boilermaker and a member of the Boilermakers' Union Local 687.


Mr. Owens is survived by his daughter, Krystal Owens Tolson and her husband William Tolson III of Ladson, SC; sons, Johnny L. Owens of North Charleston, SC and Edward Owens and his wife Tina of Florence, SC; grandchildren:  Katelyn Owens, Emily Owens, Briana Tolson, Anson Tolson, Hailey Tolson, Christina Doriety, and David Strickland; sisters: Patricia Gutting of Summerville, SC, Margaret Crosby and Barbara Gray both of James Island, SC;  brother, Billy Owens of Orangeburg, SC; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Sarah Jewelene Ledford  Owens, his parents and his sister Betty Driggers.


The funeral service will be held in Northbridge Baptist Church, Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 2:00 PM.  Interment with military honors will be held at Live Oak Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Wednesday, August 17, 2011 between 7:00 and 9:00 PM.


Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Northbridge Baptist Church, 1160 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Charleston, SC 29407.
