It is a privilege to have shared your journey. Born in Ogden, Utah, May 24, 1936, Billy Weller died at home on February 13, 2024. Wife Karen and sons, Scott and Sean were with him as he had long wished when confronting his inevitable passing.
Bill's journey was principled and other - directed. After serving with the Army and Marines, Bill earned a Master Degree in Education. He committed his life to making schools a better place for children with special needs and their parents. Teaching migrant children in California, and designing in innovative programs in Gloucester, Peabody and Uxbridge, MA, in 1970 Bill was honored with a Presidential Certificate recognizing his "exceptional service to others in the finest American tradition." True to his genuine humility, he never did display that award.
But life for Bill was more than work. A nature lover, Bill found solace and strength in being in the woods. Living in Utah, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina and, most recently, South Carolina, Bill explored as much as possible. The National Parks held a special place in his heart. Perhaps his most favorite place was the woods along the Kankamangas Trail in New Hampshire and the shores of Moosehead Lake, Greenville, Maine, where he camped with his sons, leaving warm memories and much laughter. Later in life the Blue Ridge Mountains brought him peace. An animal lover, how he adored his Golden Retrievers. Appreciating other cultures, Bill enjoyed travel with Karen to Germany, Israel and Egypt and St. Johns Island. It was fortunate that he welcomed the challenges of being lost, as he was seldom bound by maps and directions.
Bill especially enjoyed cooking over a campfire and grill. Many a meal was enjoyed this way and his sons carry on the tradition. Of course, what is a good meal without a sweet dessert or piece of chocolate?
Bill was loyal to his sports teams. A true Forty-Niners, fan, his family was almost relieved that he was unable to witness this year's Super Bowl loss. He also supported the Utah Utes, who he had followed since his boyhood in Ogden.
Left to remember this special man are his wife of 39 years, Karen, of North Charleston; son, Scott of Salem, MA, son, Sean and daughter-in-law Heidi of Rockport, MA; and his brother, Dave Weller of Prescott, ID.
Bill donated his brain to the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Neuropathology Laboratory 2 MUSC specializing in research on neurological disorders. Following his wishes no service or memorial is planned. His ashes will be scattered at a later time.
