Bhupendra "Ben" Surana

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Bhupendra “Ben” Surana, who left this world on February 13, 2025, in Mount Pleasant, SC, at the age of 81.

Born on February 5, 1944, in Jodhpur, India, Ben lived a life filled with adventure, achievement, and deep connections. He attended boarding school at St. Mary’s in Mount Abu, India, and earned his high school certificate from Cambridge University in England. His academic journey continued at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He then pursued a Master’s in Electrical Engineering at IIT Chicago, followed by an MBA from SUNY Buffalo.

Ben’s career took him across the globe, beginning with seven years as an expatriate in South America and Europe while working for Westinghouse Corp. He went on to work for other multinational companies such as Danieli and Alstom, where his expertise and leadership left a lasting impact. Even in retirement, his passion for innovation led him back to work briefly, contributing to the creation of the USS Zumwalt destroyer—an experience he was immensely proud of.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ben was a man of warmth, charisma, and boundless generosity. He was the heart of every gathering, making friends wherever he went with his infectious laughter and good spirits. He was deeply cherished by his family and is survived by his son, Pavan Surana, and his wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Payal Surana; and his beloved granddaughter, Maeve Gilot. He also held a special place in his heart for Natalie and Danny Perrine, whom he embraced as his own grandchildren.

Ben’s ability to connect with people and his zest for life made the world a brighter place. His legacy of kindness, humor, and wisdom will live on in the countless lives he touched.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2025 from 11:00am to 1:00pm, followed by a traditional Hindu ceremony from 1:00om to 2:00pm in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Ben’s journey was one of adventure, love, and impact. May he rest in peace, knowing he was truly cherished.
