Betty Frances Stutts Lee

February 23, 1931 — September 9, 2017

Ms. Betty Francis Stutts LeeMs. Betty Francis Stutts Lee, a longtime resident of North Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully from natural causes at her residence at the age of 86 on Saturday, September 9, 2017. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time.Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral service Saturday, September 16, 2017 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Born February 23, 1931, in Charleston, SC, Betty was the youngest child of the late Benjamin Capers Stutts and the late Effie Stutts Traynham. She was a member of Cooper River Baptist Church. As a young woman in Charleston in the forties, she worked, as so many young people did at the time, at the cigar factory downtown. After raising five children of her own however, she discovered she had a passion for taking care of little ones and became a loving care giver to young children. Eventually becoming known as "Granny", Betty helped nurture over 30 little ones all of which she referred to as "her babies", some staying with her from just a few months of age right up to when they would start pre-school, some being dropped off in the afternoons after school. Many still visited her over the years just to stay in touch and give her a hug. As that screen door closed on their way out, there was always the shout of "Luv you. Comeback to See me."Betty's other passion was gardening, and she seemed to have quite the green thumb as was evidence by the multitude of beautiful blossoms in her yard whatever the season. In the last few months, as the long days got even longer, to help pass the hours, Betty Was known to play a mean game of "Phase 10", but nothing surpassed her love and dedication to her family.

She is also preceded in death by five siblings; Earl Stutts, Iona Ehlers, Sara Jones, Dorothy Tremblay and Leonard Stutts; and her daughter, Angela Brown.Betty will forever be remembered by her devoted children, son Roger Gaskill of Summerville, daughters Belinda (Pete) Helwig of Walterboro and Barbara (David) Schofill of Summerville and son Jimmy (Tana) Lee of Goose Creek; seven treasured grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, along with dozens of beloved nieces and nephews who were all blessed to know her as were her three best friends for more years than they'd like to admit, Joan, Shirley and Robin.

Flowers will be accepted or the family suggests you consider making a memorial donation to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406, for without them she would not have had her beloved four legged companion of nine years, Franklin.
