Betty Rose Shellhamer

Betty Rose Powell Shellhamer, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and widow of Calvin A. Shellhamer, of Tamaqua, PA, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2011.


  The relatives and friends of Betty "Grammy" Shellhamer are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 in Christ Church Mt. Pleasant (Historic Church).   The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Monday, October 3, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. 


 Betty was born on June 22, 1926 in Girard Manor, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late David E. Powell and Marion Houser Powell.  She owned Contourella of Tamaqua, PA and, upon moving to Mt. Pleasant, SC worked as a Child Care Provider at Christ Church Mt. Pleasant. She was a compassionate and loving daughter, wife, mother, and friend.  She was an avid reader and recipe book collector.  Betty devoted many years of caring for others from providing countless hours of childcare to caring for her 91 year old mother until her death in 1997. Grammy will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all the children for whom she cared over the years. 


She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Kutcher and her husband, Joe of Mt. Pleasant, SC; six grandchildren, Trista Sue Kutcher, Suzanna Kutcher, and Samantha Rose Kutcher, all of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Lori Shellhamer Steigerwalt, Calvin D. Shellhamer, and Daniel N. Shellhamer, all of Tamaqua, PA; her daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Shellhamer of Tamaqua, PA;  seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters. Betty is also survived by her devoted dog, Daisy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin, and her two sons, David E. Shellhamer and Calvin D. Shellhamer. 


 The family requests that memorials be made in Betty's memory to The Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry, P.O. Box 12905, Charleston, SC 29422.
