Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 27, 2026 in Fort Johnson Baptist Church at 11:00 am, and the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Betty was born July 11, 1939 in Grafton, West Virginia, daughter of the late John Robert Grimm and Rose Mae White Grimm. She moved from West Virginia to Bridgeport, Connecticut at age 16. She attended church camp at age 17, where she was asked by the director of Christian Education for American Baptist Convention to be his secretary. She married the Love of her life, Fred, in 1960 after meeting him at First Baptist Church. They raised their family in Newtown CT, until she retired from Branson Ultrasonics, as Human Resource Manager after 18 years. At that time, she and Fred moved to Barefoot Bay, FL, and Greeneville ME, spending 6 months in each location until Fred's death in 2006, at which time she stayed in Charleston SC. They were happily married for 46 years. She took special pride in her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed singing, and was a member of FJBC Joy Choir, as well as singing with Lowcountry Sr Center Choir. She volunteered at Palm Bay Hospital in Florida, James Island Elementary School and the Moose Head Historical Society. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and doing anything for others.
Betty believed that God guided her steps by putting her in places where she grew and learned. She loved helping the beautiful people that molded her life and enriched her love for her Lord and his creations.
She is survived by her son, Frederick Adam Schempp, III (Nora); daughter, Gayle Schempp Scott (Bo); grandsons, Frederick Adam Schempp, IV and Robert Thomas Schempp; granddaughters, Vanya Valeria Scott and Katerina Anzhela Scott; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Adam Schempp, Jr.; sister, Patricia Calandro; and brother, Larry Grimm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Betty's memory to Fort Johnson Baptist Church, James Island, SC.
