Betty McLean Parks, 82, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Monday, March 11, 2013. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013, in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, at 1:00 pm . The family will receive friends Saturday from 12 Noon to 1:00 pm in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
Betty was born April 6, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama, daughter of the late Otto E. McLean and Mabel Winters McLean. She was a homemaker and affectionately known as "Shugga" by her children. She was one of three founding members of the Northbridge Terrace Garden Club in 1958 which is the oldest garden club in South Carolina. She spent over 25 years of her life as a volunteer with Camp Happy Days, Crisis Ministries Soup Kitchen for which she received the Governor's Award for volunteerism, Gibbes Museum of Art, as well as teaching hundreds of children to swim at the Northbridge Terrace Swimming Pool and YWCA, and volunteered with the literacy program in Charleston teaching adults to read.
She is survived by her two daughters, Colleen Parks of Charleston, Aleta Riesberg and her husband Brian of Mt. Pleasant; three sons, Daryl Parks and his wife Kathryn of Burnsville, NC, Kip (Keith) Parks of Mt. Pleasant, and Brian Parks and his wife Allison of Charleston. She is survived by seven grandchildren: Stephen Parks, Austin Parks, Ryan Parks, Adam Riesberg, Megan Parks, Annie Riesberg and Lauren Riesberg; sister, Jean McVea of Gulf Shores, Alabama, brother-in-law, William B Daniel of Georgia and many nieces and nephews. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Dorothy Daniel, by her husband and life long friend, Alton H. Parks, a grandson, Sullivan McLean Riesberg and son-in-law, Terry J. Foster.
