Betty Ruth Murff

August 24, 1927 — May 16, 2013

Heaven has gained a new angel. Betty M. Murff was welcomed by her Lord and Savior Jesus and the Love Of Her Life Barry on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service Monday, May 20, 2013 in Ashley River Baptist Church, at 2 pm. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4 until 6 pm at J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.

Betty was born on August 24, 1927, in Spartanburg, SC, to Louie W. Maddox and Mildred Ruth Maddox. Betty was an only child until she was 21 and her brother, Riley Austin Maddox was born. She moved to Charleston in grammar school and graduated from Chicora High School. Betty was a member of the first class to have 12 grades to graduate. She also finished Rice Business College. Betty worked at Southern Bell Telephone until 1953.

Betty was a homemaker after her daughter (Beth) was born. She enjoyed being with her family and friends and entertaining in their home. When someone was sick or needed any type of help, Betty was the first one there. She was always willing to help. Betty loved taking pictures and making scrapbooks. She loved traveling, camping, gardening and reading. Betty witnessed to everyone and invited them to church. She was a kind and gentle person with a sweet smile and willingness to help. Betty was known as Nannie by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All of them and their friends would stop by frequently to visit and they were always fed. The comment was made - "If you leave Nannie's hungry, it's your own fault." This was true for her daughter's friends also.
Betty was the true Southern Christian Lady. She was extremely active with volunteer work. Betty was an active member of Ashley River Baptist Church. Betty taught Sunday School for 3rd grade and worked in Vacation Bible School. She sang in the senior choir and helped Barry plan the senior adult group trips. Betty was very active in the Women's Missionary Union and many other activities. She was a volunteer at Roper Hospital for 35 years and was President of the group for one year. Betty also volunteered with the telephone company pioneers.

She had a tremendous love of family. Betty is survived by her daughter, Beth M. (Gilbert) Quick of Charleston. She has four grandchildren - Jennifer E. (Richard) Happ, Kevin M. (Marena) Spell, Joseph G. Quick and Christopher J. (Gina) Quick. Betty also has seven great-grandchildren - Kenny W. Spell, Laila E. Hall, Abigail M. Happ, Joshua G. Quick, Eliana M. Hall, Eric J. Quick and Carter E. Spell.
