Betty Weeks Moorer, 95, of North Charleston, SC passed away on Thursday, June 13th, 2024. She was born in Saint George, SC, on August 29th, 1928. She was the only child of the late Katherine (Smoak) Weeks and Zachariah Weeks.
Betty graduated from St. George High School and received her B.A. Degree from Limestone College. She taught school in Saint George and married John M. Moorer in 1952. They moved to North Charleston in 1954. Betty and John were blessed with two sons and two daughters, and she loved being their mother and raising her children.
She taught school in North Charleston for many years at North Charleston Elementary and was voted Teacher of the Year three times. Before she retired, she took up golfing and became a member of the Yeamans Hall Summer Club and the Charleston Area Ladies Golf Association.
Upon retiring, she and John bought a sailboat. For 11 years they spent winters in Key Largo and Key West, and sailed to the Bahamas 5 times. After 12 years they traded in the sailboat for an RV and traveled extensively through every U.S. state and much of Canada. In 2002, they drove to Alaska, a trip which covered 12,000 miles.
They enjoyed camping with the Lowcountry Sam's Club and with friends at Clemson University for football games. Betty was a proud wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law of eight Clemson graduates. Later in life they enjoyed camping at Edisto Beach State Park.
Betty was a musician who loved entertaining all at the piano. She played by note and by ear and was very popular at social gatherings. She was also a member of Cooper River Baptist Church, where she was a choir member for more than 40 years.
Family gathered together in May of 2021 to celebrate Betty and John's 69th wedding anniversary . After John's passing in July of 2021, Betty moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to be closer to her great grandchildren. She was a beautiful lady with a kind soul who was beloved by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by four children: Beth Grooms (John) of Fort Myers, FL; John Moorer, Jr. (Elaine) of Summerville, SC; Katherine Jeffcoat (David) of Cincinnati, OH; and James Moorer (Cynthia) of Jacksonville Beach, FL. Betty was the proud grandmother of 10 Grandchildren: Meredith Bruce (Kevin), Megan Jeffcoat Flanigan (Mathew), Janie Jeffcoat Bauer (Philip), Ashley Grooms, Kaitlyn Moorer Guffey, Katherine Moorer, Matthew Moorer, Lucas Moorer, Gabriel Moorer, and Summer Moorer, in addition to two great-granddaughters, Lucie Katherine Flanigan and Betty Reece Bauer.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Betty's life at a service to be held August 10, 2024, at 1:00 at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston. A reception will follow.
