Betty Jean Niven Martin, 86, of North Charleston, South Carolina, wife of the late David Earl Martin passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014. Her Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in the Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, 2105 Cosgrove Avenue. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. Betty was born June 22, 1927 in Columbiana, Alabama, daughter of the late Walter Niven and Kate West Niven. She was a retired educator, having taught throughout most of her career with the Charleston County School District. A dedicated member of Cherokee United Methodist Church, she was Past State President of the PTA and was a member of the Retired Educators Association. Betty was also a member of Eastern Star, the North Charleston Exchange Club, and served on state and national boards of the Girl Scouts of America. She loved gardening and the beauty of flowers, and was an avid reader and traveler. At the heart of her life was her family and her commitment to serving others, especially students with Special Needs. Betty was always on the move, and loved to volunteer with the March of Dimes, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and other groups which are committed to making life better for others.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Hallman of Charleston, SC; and her two sisters, Pauline Sanders of Pelham, AL and Evelyn Mayo of Birmingham, AL.
