Betty Jo Beard Johnson, 67, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother of Summerville, SC, died Friday, February 25, 2011, in a hospital in Charleston, SC. 

Born March 30, 1943 in Maiden, NC, she was the daughter of Gaither Lee Beard and Mildred Pauline Hartsoe Beard. 

She was a faithful member of Mays Chapel United Methodist Church in Maiden, NC and Goose Creek United Methodist Church, Goose Creek, SC.  She was a volunteer for more than 30 years at the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran's Medical Center, Charleston, SC.  She was a member of the American Legion Post 166 Auxiliary for 35 years and a longtime member of the AMVETS.

She is survived by six children, Randy Helms, Daphine Ide, Lori Basham (Robert), Rodney Helms (Donna), Curtis Helms (Pamela) and Marty Johnson (Donna Works); eight grandchildren, Christopher Ide, Dan'elle Moore, Charity Sunshine Snyder, Quinton McGrew, Michael Helms, Jennifer Walker, Jessica Helms and Nicole Johnson; twelve great grandchildren;  sister, Carolyn Jones (Dan) of Lincolnton, NC,  brother, Donald Beard (Erlise) of Maiden, NC.  She was predeceased by a grandson, Robert Walker and a daughter-in-law, Judy Helms.

A memorial service will be held in Mays Chapel United Methodist Church, 1707 Mays Chapel Church Road, Maiden, NC 28650 Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 2 PM.  A memorial service will be held in Goose Creek United Methodist Church Friday, March 4 at 3 PM.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Goose Creek United Methodist Church, 142 Redbank Road, Goose Creek, SC 29445 and/or Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, ATTN:  Women's Auxiliary, 109 Bee Street, Charleston, SC 29401-5703.
