Betty Stehmeier Debnam, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of George F. Debnam, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 10, 2024. A celebration of life will be held at St. Andrew’s Church Mt. Pleasant on a date to be set in the future. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Betty was born on January 22, 1941 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Herman Stehmeier and Martha Shokes Stehmeier. Betty attended Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. After college, she worked at the State Ports Authority and owned Bittersweet, a beloved craft shop. She was a talented artist, skilled in crafts such as stenciling, needlepoint, quilting, and interior design.

Betty’s life was defined by her deep love for God, family, and friends. She found immense joy in spending time with her loved ones, creating memories that will be forever cherished. A gifted cook and gracious host, Betty’s home was always a place of laughter, delicious meals, and heartfelt conversations.

Betty’s heart for service extended beyond her family. She was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels, always eager to lend her time and talents to help others. Her selflessness and kindness touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on her community.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, George Debnam, Sr.; her son, George Debnam, Jr; three grandsons, George F. Debnam III, John T. Debnam, Finley B. Debnam and their mother, Justa Debnam; and sister, Shirley Winter; as well as nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Herman William Stehmeier. 

Betty will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, whose love and compassion enriched the lives of all who knew her. Her legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s Church (440 Whilden St, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464) and St. Johannes Lutheran Church (48 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC 29401).
