Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina - Betty Ann Fowler Davis, age 94, died on September 3, 2024. Betty was born and raised in East Point, Georgia. She attended Russell High School in East Point, Georgia and Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.
After graduation, Betty worked for a short time as a telephone operator before becoming a teacher. Betty loved teaching school, especially 4th grade. She began her career at College Park Elementary School and taught at schools in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina for over thirty years.
Although Betty knew the love of her life, Dan Davis, as early as age six, they fell in love in the 1950’s when Betty began writing and visiting Dan in a tuberculosis rehabilitation facility in Augusta, Georgia. Their relationship grew through their letters to each other and during Betty’s visits. Betty and Dan were married on June 19, 1955. They were soul mates.
Betty and Dan lived in Georgia and Florida before moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Betty, a diehard Southern Baptist, became an Episcopalian at Trinity Church, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. After moving to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Betty transferred her membership to Christ Church (now Christ Church Anglican). Betty and Dan were faithful members of the 8:00am service in the historic church. They became great friends with many of the members of their small group.
Betty loved the beach and birds. At the beach, Betty spent her time at the water’s edge, searching for seashells and sharks’ teeth. Her extensive collection was donated to teachers to be used in classrooms across South Carolina. On the deck of their home in Mt. Pleasant, Betty had a special whistle to call the bluebirds for live worms. Amazingly, the bluebirds grew comfortable with her sitting close by and would come to the deck without fear.
Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and a caring friend to many. Nothing made her happier than a visit and a hug from her grandsons. She was a gracious hostess and she and Dan often had friends and neighbors over for dinner, on holidays, and special occasions. Betty was a good cook and while she was known for her pimento cheese, her pound cakes were legendary.
On Colfax Court, Betty and Dan met wonderful neighbors, including Donna and Bob Krantz who loved Betty and Dan as if they were their own parents. When dementia began to take hold of Betty’s mind, Lucille Mitchell became a loyal and faithful caregiver whose unwavering dedication is much appreciated.
Betty is survived by two daughters, Dana Turner (Brandon) and Rebecca Fletcher; grandsons Gavin Fletcher, Hayden Fletcher, and Reid Fletcher; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sandra and Jimmy Gardner; nephews Scott Gardner (Sandy) and Drew Gardner and their children, Nicholas Gardner (Suzie), Russell Gardner and Leah Gardner; and cousins Eric Edmondson (Nancy) and Amy Miller (Sam). Betty is preceded in death by her mother and father, Bertha and Hoke Fowler; her beloved husband, Gordon Daniel (“Dan”) Davis; son-in-law, Michael Fletcher; and first cousin, Nelson Edmondson (Frankie).
A private service of remembrance will be held for family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the National Audubon Society at www.audubon.org.
