Betty Jean Varnell Carter
Betty Jean Varnell Carter, 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Marcelle Dallas Carter, Jr. (Pete) died Thursday, September 20, 2018. Her graveside service will be held Thursday, September 27, 2018 in First (Scots) Presbyterian Churchyard, 53 Meeting Street at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at the church social hall. The family will welcome friends on Sunday, September 23, 2018 in the reception area of Myers Hall, Bishop Gadsden from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Betty Jean was born July 20, 1929 in Athens, Alabama, daughter of the late John Cleveland Varnell and Gertrude Mae Snipes Varnell. She was an honor graduate of University of North Alabama, and a high school biology instructor in Sheffield, AL, Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC. Betty and Pete moved to Charleston in 1963, and Betty entered the world of real estate. With George Hamrick, she founded Hamrick-Carter, Inc. Realtors. She served on the Real Estate Commission of the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation; was elected president of the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors; and honored as a Realtor Emeritus in 2012. Betty was a member of The Garden Club of Charleston and the Ladies Benevolent Society.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Pete; daughter, Mary Dallas Carter Moore (Cliff); son, Gaines Parkerson Carter (Chris); four grandchildren: William C. Moore IV (Sarah), Parkerson C. Moore (Jessica), John C. "Jack" Moore, and Kelly Caroline Carter; three great-granddaughters: Virginia Lockwood Moore, Lily Langdon Moore, and Charlotte Anne Moore; and the gracious and loving staff of Myers Hall and the Read Cloister at Bishop Gadsden.
